The Emergence of Contemporary Greek Fascism

23.02.2015

25th January was the date that Greece left party Syriza made it's breakthrough in politcs by gaining 149 seats (two mandates from majority) in the greek national parlament. Many have applaued this development but few have highlighted the fact that the neo-naziparty Golden Dawn became the third biggest party in the polls despite the fact that most of their leaders are in pre-trial custody. The loss of only one parlamentary mandate and a few lesser votes means a stable base for a growing fascism in Greece and a concern for the progresive social movements. In the article "Golden Dawn's consolidation and it's reluctant prosecution" Marietta Simegiatou gives us a good historical oveview of the emergence of Golden Dawn and today's situation.
