15M, Occupy and Beyond

06.05.2013

At the gathering of the Transnational Institute of Social Ecology (TRISE) in Crete last March, New Compass editor Camilla Hansen held a presentation about the new social movements that emerged in 2011, with a focus on the Spanish 15M movement and the global Occupy movements. The presentation explored the occupation of public spaces, the popular assemblies and the movements’ prefiguring of political and economic alternatives in encampments and in local communities. Special attention was paid to how the movements practice direct and participatory democracy and their proposals to democratize society. The presentation can be downloaded here.
